He deliberate to develop his territories and set his eyes upon Travancore, which in line with the Treaty of Mangalore, was an ally of the British East India corporation. He launched an assault on the lines of Travancore in December 1789 but was met with resistance from the military of the Maharajah of Travancore. This marked the starting of the 1/3 Anglo-Mysore struggle. The Maharajah of Travancore appealed to the East India manufacturer for help, and in response, Lord Cornwallis formed alliances with the Marathas and the Nizam of Hyderabad to oppose Tipu and developed a strong military drive.
